The hangar which held most of their work was built upon some
land which didn't belong to them, but which they were allowed
to use. And the owner didn't mind as long as the brothers
didn't let the livestock out.

After the Wrights' success with the first Wright flyer at
Kitty Hawk, they built a second plane, the Wright Flyer II,
above. See the smaller wings in front of the big ones?
Those are the elevators. On modern planes, they're located in
the rear. The first elevators were located in the front.
They'll soon find out that they should place the elevators
further away from the main wings. This airplane never flew very
well. Too erratic.

Their next airplane, the Wright Flyer III, proved to be the
world's first practical aircraft, and the first one
which could exhibit control in all three axes of flight - roll,
pitch and yaw. The aircraft is flying to the left in the
picture. Onboard weight needed repositioning. And note how far
the front elevators are from the main wings.
Much smoother control and stability.
