When Jimmy Doolittle asked Hap to "put me in the game,
coach," Hap was a two-star general. Hap was very pleased to
hear it, because it meant that Jimmy was joining out of love
for his country. Doolittle would get a massive cut in salary by
doing so.

To commemorate the 119 flyers that trained with Orville and
Wilbur at their flying school, a plaque was made with all the
names. Hap was one of them. Very few of them were still living
only ten years later.

When the Wright brothers were honored in 1940
with the Wright Memorial built at Wright-Patterson AFB, Hap was
asked to be there to help make the presentation. Orville and
Arnold were the best of friends until Orville's death
in 1948. Here you see the perfect example of teacher and
student.
