
Jimmy needed to be the first one to take
off, to show everyone that it could be done. And if he
could do it, well, maybe they all could do it. They all did. In
the picture above, he's already lifting off from the deck. Can
you see it?

The famous picture above that graces so many
history books. A strong gale blew that morning, helping
the crews to get the lift they needed for takeoff.

Jimmy received the Medal of Honor by none other
than President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Tokyo raid.
Hap's standing off left in the background, and George C.
Marshall, Chief of Staff, is on far right. Joe, his wife,
is left of Jimmy and looking very proud. Jimmy didn't
think he deserved it. But he did.
